Hawks Compete at Division 2 Sectionals

BW Runners competed in the Osceola Division 2 Sectionals on Friday, October 19 at the Osceola High School. Nineteen Division 2 teams from northern Wisconsin participated in the event. The top boys two teams and girls teams, as well as the top five individuals runners for boys and girls, advanced to State level competition in Wisconsin Rapids.

For Division 2 boys, Ashland (first place, 65 points) and Amery (second place, 79 points) advanced to state this year. Middle Border Champion Eric Teig of Amery was also first in sectionals with a time of 16:07 in the 5000 meter race.

For girls, Amery (first place, 71 points) and New Richmond (second place, 90 points) advanced to state. Trisha Weyandt of Northwestern won the girls sectional with a time of 15:20 in the 4000 meter race.

BW Hawks Boys placed 16th in the field of 19 teams. Running first for the boys was Scott Schollmeyer with a time of 19:41. Aaron Peterson was the second Hawk to finish the race with a time of 19:51. Also running for the Hawks were Greg Lund (20:01), Fabian Knobloch (20:28), Tim Gartman (20:58), Nik Hovde (21:05), and Derek Lindbom (21:56).

BW girls also placed 16th in the 19 team field. Sophomore Catherine Hennessy was the first Hawk to finish. Her time in the 4000 meter race was 18:04, a personal best for her. Freshmen Kristin Hovde ran a strong race at 19:02, also her personal best. Freshmen Rachel Ungar finished in 19:27, Sophomore Heather Gunderson in 21:34, and Sophomore Hillary Lindbom ran a 23:34.

Although the Boys and Girls team did not place high at Sectionals this year, we look for some improved performances next year. The 2000 year team has been a very young team with some strong freshmen and sophmore runners. With the experiened runners like Aaron Peterson, Scott Schollmeyer, and Catherine Hennessy to lead the team in ë01, I look for next year to be a much improved season in terms of team competition. This year we focused on setting and reaching personal goals and on developing the young runners on our team. We will have some strong runners coming next year from the Junior High. Thanks to Coach Dale Trunkel for an excellent season at the Middle School. Running is a very personal sport that requires self-discipline and hard work not only during the season, but year around. It takes more than one year for an athlete to develop as a runner. We have many runners here at BW that have potential to be very competitive next year.

Thanks to everyone in the community for their support of this sport. A special thanks to Claire Stein for all heís done to build the sport in Baldwin-Woodville and to Coach Dale Trunkel for his work at Viking this year. I am looking forward to next year.
